President John Dramani Mahama officially launched the Adwumawura Programme, an initiative aimed at addressing youth unemployment and fostering entrepreneurship across Ghana. The launch event, held at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi, attracted a notable audience of government officials, young entrepreneurs, and community leaders.
The Adwumawura Programme is designed to create, mentor, and support a minimum of 10,000 businesses annually, with a particular focus on empowering young individuals aged 18 to 35. Beneficiaries of the programme will receive comprehensive assistance, including skills training, mentorship, access to start-up capital, and essential equipment, thereby ensuring the sustainability and success of their ventures.
In his address, President Mahama underscored the programme’s importance in tackling youth unemployment, which he identified as one of Ghana’s most pressing challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating decent and sustainable job opportunities for young people, in alignment with the broader agenda of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stimulate economic growth and innovation.
The initiative is supported by a GH₵100 million allocation from the 2025 Budget Statement, presented by Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson. Additionally, the government plans to introduce complementary initiatives, such as the National Apprenticeship Programme, which will provide free technical and vocational training to further support the youth.
Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, also addressed the gathering, urging young people to take full advantage of the programme to forge a brighter future for themselves and the nation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering the youth and fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurship.
The launch of the Adwumawura Programme marks a significant advancement in Ghana’s efforts to combat unemployment and position the youth as vital contributors to national development. With its comprehensive support system, the programme is poised to transform the entrepreneurial landscape and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic growth.
