President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a measured response to addressing the recent recruitment challenges faced by Ghana and has proposed a forward-looking strategy to expand employment opportunities for the country’s youth. He described the recruitment exercises as both enlightening and informative, noting that approximately 500,000 applicants competed for around 5,000 positions. The President explained that this significant imbalance underscores the urgent need to reevaluate national employment policies.
In addressing members of the diaspora, he emphasised that the challenge goes beyond public-sector recruitment and requires a comprehensive, sustainable national response. He proposed a strategy focused on private-sector-led job creation, enhanced skills development, and the promotion of entrepreneurship as essential components of the Government’s approach.
He stressed that “the Government alone cannot provide employment for all,” highlighting the necessity of expanding private-sector opportunities and equipping young Ghanaians with relevant skills that enable self-employment and the ability to create jobs for others. Additionally, he called for a closer alignment between education and vocational training with the needs of the industry, as well as for strengthened partnerships—both domestically and internationally—to drive innovation and enhance the capacity of the labour market.
The dialogue provided a constructive platform for engagement between Ghana’s leadership and the diaspora, fostering a shared understanding and encouraging collaborative solutions.
