The High Commissioner of the Republic of Ghana to South Africa, His Excellency Benjamin Anani Quashie, together with two officials from the Pretoria Mission, embarked on a consular fact-finding visit to East London on 28th April, 2026. The mission, among other objectives, sought to assess the situation on the ground in the province in the wake of xenophobic incidents.
In East London, High Commissioner Quashie engaged the provincial authorities before meeting the Ghanaian Association in the province. The engagement was intended to foster dialogue and to identify their specific concerns and needs. Participants expressed deep appreciation for the visit, noting that it was the first of its kind during the challenging circumstances of this nature. They indicated that the High Commissioner’s presence in the province during these challenging times served as a source of encouragement to the community.
Addressing the participants, High Commissioner Quashie urged them to remain law-abiding at all times, including in the aftermath of the recent attacks. He further encouraged them to remain attentive to communications from the Mission for timely guidance and advisories. He also requested that they share relevant updates on developments in their respective areas to enable the Mission to formulate province-specific recommendations aimed at protecting and supporting their welfare.
