In a move to bolster agribusiness and enhance mechanised farming, President John Mahama announced that the Ministry of Finance has approved the acquisition of over 600 pieces of agricultural machinery under the Big Push infrastructure initiative.
The Big Push Initiative involves an investment of ten billion US Dollars ($10bn) over five (5) years to achieve an upgrade in social and economic infrastructure to create a platform for the transformation of our economy in furtherance of our One Million Jobs Plan. These investments will be financially structured to ensure that there will be no additional burden on the public debt.
At the launch of the National Agribusiness Dialogue held at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel in Accra on 28th July, 2025, the President shared that the equipment will play a crucial role in establishing 11 out of the planned 50 farmers’ service centres in key agricultural zones across the country.
According to H.E. the President, “these tractors and equipment will not be sold to farmers as was the practice in the past, instead, they will be stationed at strategically located farmers’ service centres to provide essential mechanisation support. Farmers will have the opportunity to register with their local centre and request services as needed.”
The President underscored that this new approach prioritises access over ownership. He noted that farmers do not necessarily need to own tractors or harvesters; rather, they require timely and reliable services to enhance their productivity. “What farmers need is not to own tractors and combine harvesters. What they need is the service of tractors and combine harvesters,” he added.
This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving agricultural productivity and supporting the livelihoods of farmers across the nation.
